Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki Sweep Opening Round of Canadian National Series

    6/5/2012 8:41:29 AM

Kamloops, BC(June 4, 2012) The 2012 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross season kicked off this past weekend at Nanaimo, British Columbia’s Wastelands MX park and even though heavy rains made for muddy start to the season, the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki team started things off right by taking both class wins and another podium position as Matt Goerke and Teddy Maier took the wins in the MX1 and MX2 classes, respectively, while Kyle Beaton returned from missing a season due to injury to finish second to his teammate in MX2.

The season started off with the start of the MX2 class and Beaton, in his return to outdoor racing, wasted no time in getting back to the front of the pack as he grabbed the moto one holeshot and the early lead. Behind him, Maier suffered a first turn crash that left him almost lap but after extricating himself from the wreckage, he got going, put his head down and charged hard through the mucky conditions. Beaton would end up a solid second in his first outdoor moto in two years while Maier would work his way all the way up to 7th by moto’s finish in a championship saving ride.

In the second moto, Maier would get a top three start and quickly work his way to the front. From there he checked out to take the moto win and the overall on the day. Beaton would be forced to pull in for fresh goggles in the extremely muddy conditions and still manage to come back to sixth to join Maier on the podium with a second overall on the day. Said Maier on taking the first win of 2012: “Man, when I was down in the first turn with these bikes on top of me I thought I was done, but luckily I was able to get up and charge back to 7th. I wasn’t expecting to get the overall win after that but I’ll take it and it’s going to be sweet running that red plate next weekend.”

In the MX1 class, Matt Goerke proved that with a season of Canadian racing under his belt and fully healed from his wrist injury, he is the rider to beat in 2012 as he grabbed both holeshots and made it a clean sweep of the day as he won both motos. He only briefly relinquished the lead in moto one as he made a pit stop to grab a pair of fresh goggles in the extremely muddy conditions. Just like Maier, Goerke will be running the red number plate signifying the series points leader when the series moves on to the team’s hometown race next weekend in Kamloops. Said Goerke of his dominant win: “It was awesome starting off the season with two moto wins. I lost the lead there when I pulled in to get goggles but I was able to quickly get back by Facciotti and things were pretty smooth from there.”

Joining Goerke in the MX1 class was Tyler Villopoto, younger brother of reigning AMA Supercross and Motocross champion, Ryan, and in his first Canadian National race, Villopoto put in a strong and consistent ride in the mud as he finished 6-8 for 6th overall.

The team now heads to their home base of Kamloops, British Columbia as the series moves there for round two, next weekend at Whispering Pines Raceway. With the series stopping in their hometown, the Leading Edge dealership is hosting an open house and autograph signing with the team on Thursday, June 7th at 6:30pm. Come on out and support the team.
